It has been two weeks in China…and considering how often people are surprised by the fact that I am American, I want to tell most – if not all – of the situations that I find myself in when this very reaction comes up.
It is absolutely hilarious whenever I receive this reaction… I have received it, my friends who are first generation have also received it. The Chinese only associate – and I ran into this in Taiwan too – being American with being blue eyed with blonde hair. Anyone else…is from somewhere else.
I think this section will show how I am learning from the Chinese but also how they are learning a lot about the REAL America. Being in China makes me even more grateful for the melting pot culture that we have in America…America may not be perfect but it is so important to be educated about the different types of people in the world. It is so important be in a position to regularly hear about those complex balances that come with having so many different parts to your background. You learn what you identify with and you learn about your friends in a way that you would not be able to if you lived in a largely homogenous society.
It is really interesting…to really take a step back and recognize the benefits of being in a diverse society compared to not being in one.
As always, thank you for following my journey! I hope that you all enjoy reading!
